Wilhelm Wundt (1832\u20131920) was a German scientist who is credited with opening the first psychology research lab in 1879. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Wundt viewed psychology as a scientific study of conscious experience, and that the goal of psychology was to identify components of consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Wundt used introspection, a process by which someone examines their own conscious experience as objectively as possible. His goal was to uncover the structures that made up the components of the mind. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Wundt\u2019s version of introspection used only very specific experimental* conditions designed to produce a scientific and repeatable experience of the mind (Danziger, 1980): <\/p>\n\n*
(1) use of \u201ctrained\u201d or practiced observers* who could immediately observe and report a reaction <\/p>\n\n*
(2) use of repeatable stimuli that always produced the same* experience to allowed the observer to be fully attentive to the inner reaction <\/p>\n\n*
(3) The same stimulus, physical surroundings* and instructions were given to each observer <\/p>\n\n*
These experimental requirements were put in place to eliminate interpretation and bias in the reporting of internal experiences. As James saw it, psychology\u2019s purpose was to study the function of behavior in the world. Functionalism focused on how mental activities helped an organism fit into its environment. Functionalists were also more interested in the operation of the whole mind rather than of its individual parts \u2013 the focus of structuralism. <\/p>\n\n
Like Wundt, James believed that introspection could serve as one means by which someone might study mental activities. However, James' students also relied on more objective measures, including the use of various recording devices, and looking at concrete products of mental activities. An article by Naomi Weisstein, first published in 1968 (Weisstein, 1993), stimulated a feminist revolution in psychology. She criticized male psychologists for constructing the psychology of women entirely out of their own cultural biases and without careful experimental tests to verify any of their characterizations of women.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Weisstein used, as examples, statements by prominent psychologists in the 1960s, such as this quote by Bruno Bettleheim: \u201c. . . we must start with the realization that, as much as women want to be good scientists or engineers, they want first and foremost to be womanly companions of men and to be mothers.\u201d Weisstein\u2019s critique formed the foundation for the subsequent development of a feminist psychology that attempted to be free of the influence of male cultural biases on our knowledge of the psychology of women and, indeed, of both genders. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Culture has important impacts on individuals and social psychology, yet the effects of culture on psychology are under-studied. There is a risk that psychological theories and data derived from white, North American settings could be assumed to apply to individuals and social groups from other cultures and this is unlikely to be true (Betancourt & L\u00f3pez, 1993). <\/span><\/p>\n\n
One weakness in the field of cross-cultural psychology<\/a> is that in looking for differences in psychological attributes across cultures, there remains a need to go beyond simple descriptive statistics (Betancourt & L\u00f3pez, 1993).
