Wilhelm Wundt (1832\u20131920) was a German scientist who is credited with opening the first psychology research lab in 1879. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Wundt viewed psychology as a scientific study of conscious experience, and that the goal of psychology was to identify components of consciousness. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Wundt used introspection, a process by which someone examines their own conscious experience as objectively as possible. His goal was to uncover the structures that made up the components of the mind. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Max Wertheimer (1880\u20131943), Kurt Koffka (1886\u20131941), and Wolfgang K\u00f6hler (1887\u20131967) were three German psychologists who immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century to escape Nazi Germany. These men are credited with introducing psychologists in the United States to various Gestalt principles. The word Gestalt roughly translates to \u201cwhole.\u201d A major emphasis of Gestalt psychology deals with the fact that although a sensory experience can be broken down into individual parts, how those parts relate to each other as a whole is often what the individual responds to in perception.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Gestalt psychologists described a number of Principles of Perceptual Organization<\/em><\/strong>. These principles seek to explain heuristics that people use to organize a scene. Behaviorism\u2019s emphasis on objectivity and focus on external behaviour had pulled psychologists\u2019 attention away from the mind for a prolonged period of time. An article by Naomi Weisstein published in 1968 stimulated a feminist revolution in psychology (Weisstein, 1993). Wesstein criticized male psychologists for constructing the psychology of women entirely out of their own cultural biases <\/strong>and without careful experimental tests to verify any of their characterizations of women.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Weisstein used as examples statements by prominent psychologists in the 1960s, such as this quote by Bruno Bettleheim: \u201c. . . we must start with the realization that, as much as women want to be good scientists or engineers, they want first and foremost to be womanly companions of men and to be mothers<\/em>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n
Weisstein\u2019s critique formed the foundation for the subsequent development of a feminist psychology <\/strong>that attempted to be free of the influence of male cultural biases on our knowledge of the psychology of women and, indeed, of both genders. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

Culture has important impacts on individuals and social psychology, yet the effects of culture on psychology are under-studied.
