Without it, we would be forced to rely solely on intuition, other people\u2019s authority, and blind luck. While many of us feel confident in our abilities to decipher and interact with the world around us, history is filled with examples of how very wrong we can be when we fail to recognize the need for evidence in supporting claims. <\/span><\/p>\n\n
For centuries humans believed that trephination, the practice of making a hole in the skull, allowed evil spirits to leave the body. This practice was thought to cure mental illness, which was considered a spiritual affliction rather than a medical concern. <\/span><\/p>\n\n

In addition to requiring that science be empirical, the scientific method demands that the procedures used be objective<\/strong>, or free from the personal bias or emotions of the scientist<\/em>.
