The middle image<\/strong> is based on computerized tomography (CT) scan. CT uses x-rays to generate a static image of the brain. X-rays are passed throught the head, with different densities of tissues permitting different amounts of x-rays to pass through to the other side.<\/p>\n\n
Using this technique Phelps and Mazziotta (1985) found evidence of <\/span><\/a>structural damaged subcortically, but didn\u2019t find any damage in the cortex.<\/p>\n\n

The bottom image<\/strong> is based on positron emission tomography (PET). PET uses a radioactive tracer molecule attached to a glucose molecule. As the radioactive tracer decays it emits positrons that is used to build an image of where glucose is being consumed in the brain. Phelps and Maziotta (1985) found evidence of reduced functioning in the left frontal lobe. The brain can be divided into the cortex and the subcortical structures. The cortex is the part of the brain that most people think of when they pictures a brain - it's that pink, wrinkly outter bit that is easily visible. However, underneathe the 2-3mm layer that makes up the cortex, there is vast network of pathways and structures that make up with subcortical structures of the brain.<\/span><\/p>\n\n
Interestingly, the brain follows evolution so that the lower parts \u2013 the subcortical structures \u2013 are tasked with the older, more basic neural functions.
